When Julia and I got to the electronics lab after lunch, several of the members of the group were already there. Mark and Jeff were working on their Micro Chromas and daughterboards. Others were reworking their trainer designs to use 68705s.

"Hi guys," I said to all and no one in particular. "I doodled up some ideas about the daughterboard last night."

"How'd you find time?" Jeff smirked, with a meaningful glance at Julia.

Julia rolled her eyes and shook her head.

"I managed. Do you want to see?"

"Ignore Jeff." But Mark also smirked. "Yes. We want to see."

Julia sighed. "Should I take notes on this, too?"

"Could you?"

"Sure." She gave me an indulgent smile.

"Sorry. Appreciate it." I gave her my doodlings from the night before and went to the chalkboard. She sat down between Mark and Jeff at our lab table, and they helped her translate my diagrams and explanations into useful notes.

While I was working at the chalkboard, Winston came in and sat down and started copying the diagrams.

As I completed the diagrams, Bob commented, "You're trying to put the whole computer on the daughterboard."

Suzanne came in about that point, and also sat down and started copying the diagrams

"Yeah, if I actually build one with all of this on the daughterboard connected through the CPU socket, it's likely to shake loose and come unplugged and leave the Micro Chroma with memory but no brains. But it's something to think about. Scratch calculations."

"How about adding just the DMA controller?" Jeff asked.

"If I understand the application notes, this should cover it." I drew a second diagram with just the 68701 and the DMA controller and some support circuitry.

He nodded thoughtfully. "In that case, I'll leave space for the 6844 on mine."

Mark agreed that was a good idea. Others in the group didn't seem so sure.

Dr. Brown came in, carrying rails of ICs. "Mrs. Steward left these 68705s with me last night. As she said, there aren't quite enough for everyone to get one, but she'll be sending more pretty soon. Come get them when you're ready. First come, first serve."

"Should I make a run to Austin tomorrow for more?" I suggested.

Julia reached out and poked me in the back with her pencil. "You need to finish your disk drive controllers. If I understand right, we need those so everyone can program their 68705s."

She was right.

So I sat down and focused on writing a set of programs to exercise and test the disk drives by writing a variety of troublesome pseudorandom data patterns and reading them multiple times. My initial test routines recorded parity errors in addition to reads that didn't match the generated data, but did not attempt retry-on-error.

While the test programs were running, several of us made a run to the parts store out on West County Road, and visited the surplus store nearby. When we came back, Julia had the parts she needed for her Micro Chroma and its daughterboard, and a keyboard that would need a decoder.

Until time to go deliver the newspapers, I made sure the students building Micro Chromas were progressing okay, and helped other students with whatever they were working on, mostly trying to understand the differences between the 6801 and the 6805, and modifying their trainer designs to fit.

Mike was working on adding a 68008 to his daughterboard design as a co-processor.

"You know, anything you do now with the 68008 is strictly theoretical," I warned him. "The specs we have are tentative, and we have no idea when we can get real CPUs."

Mike shook his head. "I'm going to be ready to put one in when they're available."

"How about designing it for the base 68000 ?" I suggested. "I can get you one of those." I sensed Julia staring at my back, and I glanced over my shoulder. With her eyes, she asked me what I was doing. I gave her an it's-okay look, and she wrinkled her forehead and set her mouth slightly to the side.

"The 68000 addresses a word address space." Mike was talking about the 16-bit data bus, twice as wide as a byte wide data bus.

"I've seen application notes for multiplexing the 68000's data bus so it can read sequential bytes in a byte-wide address space."

"That'll be messy and require debugging. Besides, the 68000 is a big 64 pin chip. That's going to make the daughterboard physically unstable, too, like a daughterboard with lots of RAM and ROM."

"Point taken." The rest of his design looked good, so I left him to his own devices.

Several times, I noticed him covertly watching Julia. Once, while I was helping someone across the room, I saw Julia catch him looking at her, and she gave him a look of reproach that could have put ten 68000s in state-preserving static halt and cooled the Three-mile Island reactor core without any physical coolant, and still had effect left over.

I chuckled to myself, and she heard me, but she waited to give me a perplexed frown until Mike had looked away.

Other than Mike's sad-puppy expression, I couldn't read much from his reaction.

Dr. Brown said he'd stick around until dinnertime, so I left everyone at work on their projects and headed home to deliver my newspapers.

When I got back, I stopped the disk exerciser and checked the error counts.

"Errors?" Julia looked over my shoulder.

"There should be a few, from dust in the air and other random environmental stuff. This is about what should be expected."

"But errors are no good, right?"

"The places where the data read doesn't match the data written all show parity errors or sector checksum errors, so we're in good shape. Now I need to add retry routines, to see whether the errors will repeat."

"Hold on here," Julia complained, "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Jennifer, who was also among those watching me work, said, "Dr. Brown has explained parity in class, but some of us didn't really get it."

So I went to the chalkboard again and wrote out a list of numbers and their byte checksum in ordinary arithmetic:

Blank looks.

Mike laughed. "Well, if those are all byte values, yeah, because if the last number is changed to 289, the remainder doesn't change, but 289 stuffed in a byte gets clipped to 33 anyway."

"Exactly."

Still more blank looks than recognition.

Julia gave me a look of resignation. "Step by step, please."

Mike stood up to the board and wrote 33+256=289 beside the 33, then erased the 33 and replaced it with 289, and adjusted the sum to 789, and the integer quotient to 3:

He gave me a challenging stare. I gave him a thumbs-up, and lost a little air and sat down.

Stephan shook his head. "But what if there are multiple errors? Couldn't the errors cancel each other out?"

"It's a statistical game, really. In practice, errors that cancel each other out are really rare, and we keep the sector size small to keep it that way."

Jennifer said, "So that's the checksum?"

I nodded. "Except that the actual checksum uses exclusive-or instead of addition."

Dr. Brown laughed as most of the group looked like they were ready to give up on the question. "I'm glad it's not just me that has problems getting this across."

"It is pretty arcane math," I admitted. "It's also a case where having the computer helps a bit. I don't particularly want to clear out the error numbers, but I could write a BASIC program for this."

"I put the numbers in my notes."

Julia gave me a look that expected a reward. I gave her a hug. She stiffened and grumbled under her breath. "Just a hug?"

"I don't want to crush someone," I sub-vocalized back before saying, out loud, "I owe you one. Another one."

Julia smirked and hugged me back.

And there were snickers and chuckles.

I booted Tiny BASIC and typed, with Julia taking notes, and others copying from her notes:

I played with values in the array and showed how different changes produce different results, and how there were very few changes that could preserve the checksum.

Then I modified the summation in line 100 to use the exclusive-or, and again showed how changes in the values changed the checksum.

Several of the other members of the groups tried modifications of their own, and eventually most of the group were satisfied.

"Parity is similar, but it just works on bits, and the parity check is kept for each byte, but we can save demonstrating that for another day. Doing it in BASIC will be confusing, and doing it in assembler might not be much less confusing. And I need to go down the rabbit hole for a while."

Everyone went back to what they were doing, and I rewrote my routines, adding retires on parity and checksum errors, and adding read-after-write checks to the sector write routines. I also altered the tests to track the count of retries and non-recoverable errors, where the automatic retries didn't fix things, separately. And set the new tests running.

While those were running, I checked with Jeff and Mark on their progress. They hadn't been able to get their Micro Chroma boards with their daughterboards to boot far enough to get output on the screen, even though the video controller circuits appeared to be working. Both of their boards came up in what appeared to be a graphic mode, with arbitrary data in the video memory that showed as not-very-meaningful stripes on the screen.

"Do we want to figure out why the contents of video RAM looks like stripes instead of a TV screen filled with static?"

Jeff was quick to say "No." Mark just grinned and shook his head.

We got scopes out and started tracing signals, and found some wiring errors. With those fixed, they both got the TV-BUG prompt to show up.

They both had found decoded keyboards with ASCII output, and, with some testing and rewiring of the keyboards themelves, were able to issue commands to the monitor and get results.

"So are you and Julia going to be working on her Micro Chroma tomorrow?" Mark asked.

Julia and I exchanged glances, and she smiled.

"Probably," she said. I grinned and nodded.

"Where?" Jeff asked. "Can we come crash the party?"

"My place?" I suggested.

Julia nodded. "But only in the afternoon."

Dr. Brown interjected, "If you guys want, I'll open up this lab tomorrow afternoon, from one to four or so. Then you'll have scopes and other tools available. But only if we can shut this party down within the next half-hour or so."

That announcement was met with cheers.

"Change of plans," I declared, and we all shut our work down and packed up.

When I checked, there was only one read parity error during the second test run, and the first automatic retry got the correct data.

"Coming to my house for dinner tonight?" I turned left on Andrews Highway, coming out of the parking lot.

"Just dinner?"

"Well, and homework ..."

Julia put her hand on my hand, where it was resting on the shift lever. "Homework. Do you think we'll get my computer as far as Mark's and Jeff's tonight?" She gave my hand a squeeze.

"Was there something else you wanted to do?"

She sighed. "So many things ... I want to do ... with you ... tonight."

I swallowed hard and almost missed the red light at 27th, squealing the tires to get stopped.

Julia laughed as she braced herself with her free hand. "Wait. I didn't mean what that sounded like."

"No?"

"Maybe." A smile played across her lips.

I turned my hand palm up and returned the squeeze. Then the light turned green and I had to turn it back over and shift. Clumsily. Ground the gears.

She giggled. "Sorry."

"Lousy adrenaline rush."

For a moment, she gazed out the window instead of meeting my gaze. "I guess we need to start talking about religion seriously tonight."

"Dang. And I haven't even been trying to court you for real. But we can do that."

"Court. Sounds so courtly." She turned and smiled shyly. Or was it boldly? How can a woman be bold and shy at the same time?

I took advantage of the clear traffic to lift her hand to my lips and give it a kiss.

"Pay attention to the road."

But she didn't take her hand back.

As I turned right onto 38th Street, I said, "If you ever want to talk about Mike, I'm all ears."

She sighed. "We dated in high school, but that's long past history."

"Well, if you ever need to talk about it."

 She didn't answer that, but I felt the energy in her hand cool somewhat.

Friday morning, when I got to the electronics lab, I gave Dr. Brown my extra 68705s from the rail I had from Denny, and that made enough for all the students in the project group to get started working on 68705 projects.

Some of the group were in the lab doing so as soon as the morning lab sections were finished.

I had a BASIC project that the Micro Chroma 68's disk drives were not ready for, so I had to go to the keypunch lab. Mike was there when I arrived, working on code at a desk. I had code ready, so I took the open keypunch and punched about fifteen cards, then went to a desk to merge them into my program deck.

Mike took the keypunch after me.

I took my deck of punched cards to the computer room for a test run. Professor Bright's sister-in-law, Sherry, was the operator on duty, and she took my deck.

While I was waiting for my results, Mike came to the computer room dutch door and submitted his deck. He leaned back against the wall beside me in the hall outside the door to wait.

"So you're dating Julia."

"Well, ... I guess Julia and I are dating."

He chewed on that for a minute.

"I don't get it. She was never interested in computers or electronics when we ... back in high school."

I digested this information. "Interests change. Maybe she's seeing more of her dad's line of work."

"Maybe. He sure tried hard enough to get her interested."

More silence.

"How did you two end up getting together?"

I laughed. "Who can say? I mean, she took classes from my dad, and then she started doing some work for him. We first met in his office."

"Your dad seems to be a target for college sophomore crushes."

"True. He does. Lots of people seem to like my dad. And I seem to have been a target for transference in this case, not that that explains anything. She's been aware for some time that I'm not exactly a younger version of my dad."

The operator brought my results to the door, and I accepted my deck and the printout.

"Sorry," she said. "Had to cut off the printout after four pages."

Mike laughed.

"Yeah, that wasn't supposed to happen. Sorry. Thanks."

"Wrong variable in the loop controls?" Mike suggested.

"Possibly. I'd better get a desk and sit down with the program listing."

We nodded politely, and I returned to the keypunch lab. I was marking my listing with expected values at different flow points when Mike returned, laughing.

"Index range fault. No printout at all." He waved his listing at me and put it down on the desk next to the one I was using, and read my listing over my shoulder.

"What are you doing that for?" He pointed at a line.

"It's the way I'm handling the loop variables. How are you handling them?"

He spread his listing out on his desk and pointed at several lines. "Yeah, it's not well-structured, but it should work."

We compared notes and found places to add debugging prints to our programs. Both keypunches were open, so we quickly got our debugging cards punched up and took the decks back to the computer room.

"Debug prints, so shut it down after two pages, please." I handed my deck to the operator.

"I should be so lucky, but I have debug prints, too." Mike handed his deck to her, too.

"Gotcha." She took our decks and put them in the queue.

"She couldn't deal with my questions about the Bible, but she sure seems to have no issues with you being a Mormon."

"Should she?"

"Don't you guys have some sort of rules about not dating non-Mormons?"

"It can earn one a little social censure, and church leaders recommend against it, but, no, no specific rules against it."

Mike frowned, and thought a bit.

"Well, I suppose Baptists don't have any specific rules, either, but she's facing a lot of that social censure for your sake."

"Social censure is not a particularly useful basis for decision making. But we have been discussing religion."

The operator came to the door with our results, and we took them back to the keypunch lab.

"Dang, with the debugging prints in, I'm getting results."

"Ah. I see where my loop variables are getting skipped." I marked several lines for edits. "Constructed conditional getting jumped into."

"Huh?"

I showed Mike the GOTO command in question and the constructed conditional, using a pencil to mark the intended structure in pseudocode.

"Ah. Maybe I should be a bit more rigorous with my structurization." He penciled pseudocode into his program listing while I punched up a few more cards and swapped them into my program deck.

"Let's see what this does."

I took my deck to the computer room while he punched cards for his changes.

He came almost right behind me with his edited deck. "Yeah. Let's see some results." And he handed his deck to the operator before leaning against the wall across from me.

"Okay, so you've been talking about the differences in religion."

"So far, we're finding more in common than not."

"But you don't even worship the same God."

"Really?" I gave him a deliberately quizzical look.

"Mormon is not Jesus."

"Mormon did not claim to be Jesus. And he strongly recommended Jesus to anyone who read his book."

"Huh?"

"Would you like to read some of what he says on the subject?"

"That Golden Bible you guys use?"

"Golden?" I raised my eyebrows. "Many of buy our scriptures with gilt-edged pages, to make it harder for moths to start eating them. But other Christians do that, too. I opted for cheaper, myself. But Mormon didn't write in the Bible."

Mike looked at me suspiciously.

I grinned. "Sorry. I probably shouldn't be so elliptical."

"I don't mean to interrupt, but I have both your listings."

"Ah. Thanks."

She handed Mike his listing, and then handed me mine

"Uhm, yeah. Thanks."





The computer operator came to the door with our listings, we took them back to the keypunch room, to examine.






"So, how do you like the way she kisses?"

I looked over at Mike, and he met my gaze, defiantly, at first, then slightly embarrassed.

"She didn't tell you?"

"I asked her to tell me when she was ready."

"Huh?"

"I could see the lack of current chemistry between you two."

"You don't seem bothered."






I was in the keypunch  lab until lunch.

When I got there, the five in the microprocessors class had already breadboarded test circuits and were working on test programs. Jeff and Mark were helping them figure out the 6805 instruction set when I got there.

"Man, the 6805 instruction set is a revelation!"

Most of the students had the necessary parts in their lab kits, even without a run to Radio Shack the evening before (which several had made.. And most were doing initial were



Many of the students had already bought perfboards and other necessary parts. Some were using breadboards instead of perfboards, so it would be easier to fix their circuits if they didn't work as well as they wanted. And they got together in the lab Friday afternoon to wire them up.
I showed the other students my ideas for possibly adding ROM, RAM, and DMA on the daughterboard for the Micro Chromas.

Bob shook his head. "You're trying to put the whole computer on the daughterboard."

Mark looked at my doodling thoughtfully. "The DMA looks interesting. I think I'll leave space on the daughterboard for it."

, but no one was especially interested in exploring new territory at this point.

No one, that is, except Mike, who was already trying to design his daughterboard to have room for a 68008 coprocessor. I refrained from discouraging him for reasons I couldn't really put a finger on. But the idea got caught in my head, and I made room on my mental back burners for a project to make a 68000 coprocessor for the Micro Chroma.

Julia and I made a run to the parts store on West County Road for parts, and Suzanne and Winston caught a ride with us.

While we were there, I asked about floppy drives and keyboards, and they gave us some catalog pages.

We also dropped by the surplus shop to see if they had keyboards, and Julia found a raw keyboard she liked. I picked up an identical one, figuring I'd need it, and Suzanne grabbed the remaining one of the same type.

Winston picked up a keyboard that looked similar and showed it to me.

"Would this one work?"

I looked it over. "It has a controller chip that I don't recognize. Probably a microcontroller, and it looks like it produces serial output."

"Is that good or bad?"

"The Micro Chroma 68 wants parallel."

"Instead of serial, so it's not good."

"If we knew what the serial bits look like, we could probably use the 68705 to convert them to parallel."

"Seems like a waste of processor power."

"Depends on how badly you want this particular keyboard and how much you figure the time to rip the current CPU and keyboard matrix out is going to be worth."

"And whether I want to waste the extra power from the power supply."

"True, but it probably wouldn't be all that much."

I looked the keyboard over a bit more and asked the proprietor. "Do you have any documentation for this?"

He shrugged. "Don' know anythin' about 'em. You'll be on yer own. But I'll give it ta ya cheap."

I looked it over some more, then handed the undecoded keyboard to Winston. "Tell you what, Winston, you buy this raw keyboard and I'll see what I can do with this one."

He initially declined, but I urged him to take it and he did.

I turned back to the shop owner. "We have about twenty more students working on similar projects, and many of them'll be wantin' keypads and keyboards, too."

"That 'splains all the interest I've seen in keypads. Should be gettin' more keyboards in next week."

"Do you ever get floppy drives in?

"Never have yet. But there's always a first for ev'rythin'."

We talked a bit about the kinds of hardware the students in our project would be looking for before we headed back to the lab.

When we got back, Dr. Brown said we could keep working until dinnertime, so I could go home and take care of my newspapers and come back. Julia decided she'd stay and keep working on her board.

Before heading home for the newspapers, I spent an hour with Mark and Jeff working out more details on the daughterboard, and we were able to get their boards booting up to the TV-BUG monitor prompt.

When I got back from delivering the papers, Bob and Julia also had their boards booting to the TV-BUG prompt, and Julia had started making a clean copy of my rough diagram of the daughterboard.

Mark, Jeff, and Bob were helping other students instead of working on their keyboard decoders, and many of the students had their trainers sequencing the LED segments already.

"Well, Dr. Brown," I asked, "should I help the students who are stuck, or should I get started walking everybody through writing a keyboard decoder?"

"What's the goal?"

"Theirs or mine?"

"Now there's a good question."

So I put it to the other students. "Who wants to get a look at how to write a keyboard scanner now?"

Jeff responded immediately, "I want to try my own hand at it."

Mark nodded in agreement.

Bob added, "The daughterboard was your baby. Let us have some fun here." I looked around the room. Nobody else seemed to be anxious to offer a different opinion.

"Oh-kay. I guess Julia and I will write our own."

"Of course," said Mike, with a smirk. "And you'll show us how all about how you did it next week."

That got some chuckles from the class.

So I spent the remainder of the afternoon helping get everyone's trainers working enough to sequence LED segments. And Julia spent the time puzzling through the 6801 and 6805 datasheets. Winston and Suzanne were able to get their boards up to the TV-BUG prompt, as well.

The lab session slowed down, and students began packing up and leaving.

When the last trainer was sequencing, I stood up and moved back to sit beside Julia. Jeff and Mark were working on their keyboard decode circuits. Pat and George came over.

"You two will be working on this stuff together tomorrow, right?"

I looked around and saw Mike look up.

"I think so," I said, and looked back at Julia.

"I would be disappointed if you had other plans," she huffed in mock offense. "I'm very curious about those packages you got Thursday."

"Packages?" George asked.

"Flex and FORTH. Yeah. I guess we will be."

"Can we come over and work on our stuff, too?" Pat asked

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Mike was still watching.

"Sure." I thought I saw a frown flicker across Mike's face.

I turned to George and asked, quietly, "Does Mike need an invite, too?"

I saw a look of concern flicker across reflected in George's eyes, and I felt, more than heard, Julia draw a quick breath and I turned to look at her. I sense a veil in her eyes.

"Mm," George hesitated. "Maybe we should talk this over first."

"He's a friend isn't he?"

George didn't respond.

Pat drew a deep breath, as well. "Yeah, he's a friend."

"Not a good suggestion?" I looked inquiringly into Julia's eyes, but she continued to hold me off.

"It's okay, I won't ... I don't mind."

"I'll leave it to you guys," I turned back to Pat and George.

The road home was uncomfortably silent, and Julia kept her thoughts to herself.

"Are you going to stay for dinner with us?" I turned down 27th Street.

She didn't look at me. "Should I?"

"I'd like to have you around tonight, if you don't mind that I'll be down the rabbit hole again."

"The TI processors?"

I turned up Muskingum. "Yeah. Need to get some reading done on those. And I'll also be trying to figure out how to adapt Flex to my disk controllers while I give those drives a workout. Writing the exerciser routines is going to be pretty esoteric stuff. But it helps if you're there to listen."

She smiled a sad, slightly ironic smile. "You're going to be a hard man to live with. It's hard to keep up with you."

I did a rolling stop at the Polyantha Park intersection at 31st Street, since there was no traffic.  

"Tell me about Mike sometime?"

She turned to face the window and leaned across the gap between the bucket seats against my shoulder. Working the transmission didn't leave an arm free to wrap around her shoulder because we were in the back streets, but we were already approaching 36th Street. So I leaned my head against hers and satisfied myself with that for the last two streets home.

Julia ate dinner with us, and then she dug out her homework, and I dug out mine, and we sat together on the living room couch to work. I set up my computer on the magazine table, and we took turns using Tiny BASIC as a calculator and using the text editor.

"Magazine table?"

"Tea table, coffee table, same thing. No tea or coffee in our house. Sometimes we emphasize that fact by calling the coffee table a magazine table."

Julia laughed quietly.

Dad and Giselle were taking turns with Giselle's computer in her room, and Mom was busy getting an early start on the taxes.

When I finished my homework, I read through the datasheets and other information on the 9900 and 9940 that I had received from Jayne and Dave.

"Now where is that?" I thumbed through a datasheet.

"Where is what?"

"The description of the instruction to call a subroutine. I found the return instruction, but not the call, and I want to get a look at it."

Julia gave me a blank look.

"It's actually a full context switch on this processor."

 She raised her hands with a smile that said, "I have no idea what you are talking about."

I grinned back. "Just pretend like your listening to something that makes sense."

"Hah."

"I'm going to pretend I'm explaining it to you, but I'm explaining it to myself."

"Uh, huh." She snickered.

"The TMS 9900 has a really unusual register scheme. All the computational registers are actually in memory, pointed to by the working set register."

"I was lost when you said scheme. Or register."

"Registers are where the calculations occur, and RAM is where you store results, and the 9900 uses RAM for registers. It calls the RAM it uses the working set."

"I can pretend I might understand that someday."

We both laughed. "Thank you. Now you have to know where your registers are, so the 9900 has one real register that points to the working set. It's called WP."

"Working set pointer?"

"Careful. You might actually understand this."

"Hah."

"You also have to know where the instructions are, so the 9900 has a register for that. It's called IP."

"Instruction pointer."

"Nice. Anyway, when you call a new procedure or routine, you usually want to know how to get back to where you were."

"I could see that."

"So the 9900's call instruction holds onto the old IP and WP, loads a new WP to point to a new working set, and stores the old ones in the top of the new working set."

Julia frowned. "You know that almost makes sense."

"It does. I haven't mentioned the status register. I think it's the status register. But it saves that, too."

"Now I'm lost again."

"That's okay. I want to see how the new WP is specified, so I'm looking for the instruction, and I can't find it. I can find the return, but not the call. It's called BLWP, for branch and link WP."

I thumbed through the datasheet pages again, with Julia looking over my shoulder.

"These are jumps?" She said.

"Yeah. Conditional jumps. It's not there."

I thumbed back and forth a bit more.

"Single operand instructions. How many operands does this branch and link, uhm, WP  instruction have?"

"That's actually what I want to find out."

"B for branch."

"Yeah."

"BL."


"Branch and link, but without WP."

"BLWP," we said in unison.

"Op code 17."

"Where? I don't see seventeen."

"Binary." I pointed to it. "One zero zero zero one."

"I'll take your word for it."

I gave her a sideways hug.

Julia continued watching me.

"What?"

"So you found it. When are you going to look in those packages. I'm interested in those packages."

"Packages. Heh." I went into my room and brought out the two thick envelopes that had come the day before. "Which is most interesting?" I raised my eyebrows and sat back down.

"She gave me a sly grin. "I'm going to say disk operating system, and you're going to make me wait."

"Now why would I do that? Flex is the TSC package. Why don't you open that, and I'll open the Mountain View package."

The energy dropped from her shoulders. "What will I know by opening them?"

I grinned, "More than if you don't." I picked up the TSC envelope and handed it to her. She looked at it curiously, then proceeded to open it while I opened the other.

The Mountain View Press envelope had two thick photocopied manuals, about two hundred pages total, and a cassette. One manual, with a kind of baby blue cover, was titled, APPLE II fig-FORTH INSTALLATION MANUAL AND ASSEMBLY SOURCE LISTING WITH GLOSSARY, and the other was the baby-pink covered fig-FORTH FOR 6800 ASSEMBLY SOURCE LISTING. The cassette was labeled fig-FORTH FOR 6800 ASSEMBLY SOURCE.

Julia held four diskettes and several photocopied manuals out to me. "Like I say," she said with a lopsided smile. "They don't look very interesting, and I suppose they won't run tonight."

The diskettes were the FLEX Operating System itself, a diskette of utilities, and the Pascal and C compilers. The manuals were user's manuals for each of the compilers and for the operating system, and one labelled "Installation Hints". The former three manuals were a bit more nicely produced than the Forth Interest Group manuals.

"That's probably true about anything running tonight."

"Can I claim my first kiss from you?"

All the energy drained out of me and I wrapped my arms around her and gave her a hug. As my energy returned, I nuzzled her neck gently before drawing back to search for her lips with mine. For someone who had no idea what he was doing, it sure came naturally.

"Ahem." Giselle's voice broke through the fog. "Sorry to interrupt, but I need some help."

We both drew back.

"Thank's 'Zelle," Julia said quietly, with a shy smile, without breaking eye contact with me.

"Uh, uhm, I'm sorry. I, erm, didn't mean to interrupt."

"Nah. It's okay. I think." I'm not sure what my expression looked like.

Julia blinked first. Maybe. Then we leaned against each other, our foreheads touching, and she whispered. "Thank heavens. That was a lot of passion in a kiss. You'd better help her."

We both went into Giselle's room and helped work out some problem she was having with a saved file that she couldn't get to read back in, then went back to the living room.

(Just as a reminder, Julia, in this story, is a composite of several of the important women in my life from when I was single. Yes, that first kiss comes about five years earlier than for the real me.)

That was an experiment we didn't dare repeat that night, nor for some time after.

Instead, Julia listened patiently while I explained the program I needed to write, to generate generate a lot of pseudo-random data that would exercise the dark corners of my controller. Since the data produced by the program was deterministic, but with a distribution of values that resembled theoretical randomness, it could be recreated in the read pass, allowing me to test several times that what was written was the same as what the controller read back, without having to have a known good controller and a known good disk to compare with.

The program was done by the time I finished explaining it.

Then I borrowed Giselle's computer just long enough to write the initial read test disk on the CoCo. That took about ten minutes, and Giselle and Julia and Dad and Mom chatted in the kitchen while I worked.

I got the Micro Chroma 68 set up to read and check what it read in an endless cycle, counting the number of errors. I set it up to retry on errors, and to count the number of retries, and the number of times a retry did not get a good read.

With the exerciser routine started, we had a little scripture study, chasing down the concept of stewardship relative to revelation and commandments.

Then I drove Julia home. And we kissed each other on the cheeks, because we didn't want to risk anything more.

When I got back, I worked out a program to test both reads and writes.

I stopped the read tests after the hundredth full-disk pass and checked the counts. There were seven errors, none of them recurring, a number compatible with the amount of dust in the air.

Before I went to bed, I got it started on the read/write tests.

In the morning, after delivering the newspapers, I checked the error count and found the results similar to those for the read passes. Julia came over soon after.

"So how much remains to do before Flex runs?"

I held up the porting hints manual and we started reading through it.



I worked out the disk I/O, keyboard input, and display output routines, and Julia pretended to understand my explanations, working on homework when I was deep down the rabbit hole.




The morning sun was on my back when I rang the doorbell and Mrs. Cisneros let me in.

"Kind of early, isn't it? Wouldn't it have been less hassle for Julia to have just slept over in your sister's room?"

"Mom. Behave yourself."

I wasn't quite sure how to respond. I understood that she was giving me her approval in a sort of back-handed way, but I knew that neither Julia nor I were ready for that kind of pressure.

"You work too hard."

Julia was washing and cutting tomatoes while I chopped onions for a tossed salad. Giselle was tearing leaves of lettuce, and Mom was tending the pot of wieners boiling on the stove while Dad worked on the fruit salad.

I finished the half onion, and started peeling a large carrot. "You think so?"

"What are you going to do after we eat?"

"I thought I'd do some homework and then I could dig into writing some routines to exercise the disk drives and the controller. And then I could read through the 9900 series datasheets and --"

"I think you've over-committed yourself. What is today?"

I stalled, pointing at a green bell pepper on the counter. "Do we want this green pepper in this salad?"

Mom said, "It's up to you, hon."

Julia picked it up. "I'll cut it. What is today?

"Uhm, I heard Sinclair has released their cheap processor trick, the ZX81." I started cutting the carrot into strips.

Julia gave me a dirty look. Mom laughed, and Giselle cleared her throat.

"I don't think that's what Julia is talking about. I think this is enough lettuce."

I handed Giselle the chopped onions, and she scraped them into the bowl of lettuce.

"What day of the week is it?" Julia handed her the chopped tomatoes, which also went in.

"Thursday. Oh. Institute."

"I'd like to see what your Institute is like."

"You could take your hot dogs and salad with you and eat in the car," Mom suggested.

"Salad in the hot dogs?" I theorized.

"Even if we use slices of bread instead of buns, I think the salad will spill in the car. Are you going to dice the carrots for the salad, or are those strips for eating?" Giselle was a fan of carrot strips.

"I like carrot strips." Julia finished dicing the bell pepper and it went into the salad, as well. "Or carrot in the salad works, too. Either way."

"Let's do strips," Mom decided for us.

"Strips are good," Dad agreed.

I collected the carrot strips into a cup and checked the wall clock hanging on the edge of the dividing wall where it had been cut away to join the two half-kitchens into one when the duplex was converted to a double-sized single home by the previous owner.

"If we eat quick, we can make it to Midland in time for Institute."

"I can drive, and you can work on homework or something."

"What about your homework, Julia?"

"It'll wait."

"I'll drive." Giselle moved the salad from the counter to the table. "Then both of you can do homework."

"Maybe." I hedged.

We asked a quick blessing on the food and ate quickly, and Julia and I grabbed our backpacks. I grabbed an Institute manual, and Giselle grabbed the key to the Colt.

Giselle climbed into the driver's seat, and I opened the door on the passenger side for Julia. But Julia went to the other side and climbed in behind Giselle, giving me a smirk, and challenging me with her eyes before she ducked in whether I'd climb in beside Giselle or sit in back with her.

"You don't mind if I sit behind you, do you, do you, Giselle?"

"No problem. Not at all." Giselle started to slide the driver's seat forward.

"My legs are okay, give yourself room to drive."

"The seat is set for Joe, so I need to move it forward anyway. How's this?"

"Plenty of room."

I opened the back seat door and ducked down. "I can move the passenger seat forward and you can sit on this side."

"Get in and let's go."

I shut the forward door and climbed in.

Giselle started the engine and we left.

Julia reached out and took my hand. "Are you going to read to me from that book?"

"The Institute manual?"

"That was what you grabbed just before we left, isn't it?"

"Yeah."

I had an idea which lesson we would be studying, so I opened the manual to that lesson and Julia and I took turns reading it out load in the fading sunlight, while Giselle listened.

That Institute lesson wasn't the best Institute lesson I've ever sat in on. I guess it wasn't the worst, either. The teacher, Jerry Wilks, from Midland, had over-prepared, and had brought in a lot of non-canonical material, and the lesson drifted back and forth between listening to dry doctrine, skating into off-topic dogma, and dipping into false doctrines.

"So women who aren't making progress toward the goal of temple marriage should repent and prepare themselves to be good mothers." Jerry smiled emphatically.

Giselle raised her hand. "What about the men?"

"Well, of course the men are preparing, too."

"Or, if we aren't we should be, right?" I added.

"Of course. Of course. But I know you're all preparing, too."

One of the young men from Big Spring, Darrel Boyce, raised his hand. "So how are you preparing?"

Jerry recited the usual list, daily prayer and scriptures, weekly church meetings, accepting callings and assignments, getting a college degree so he could earn a good living, and so forth.

Jill Burnham, from Andrews, raised her hand. "Is getting a college degree a commandment?"

That sparked a bit of discussion. Many seemed to think it was a commandment for men, but not for women.

At one point, I was able to slip in, "I don't recall chapter and verse, but I have read a quote from Brigham Young to the effect that, if there a choice were required between sending the women to school or the men, he would prefer to send the women, since the women are more likely to be needing the information to teach the children."

Brother Quintas, from Seminole, said he'd read the same thing, and his wife dug out her notes from a recent conference talk, quoting Brigham Young, and expanding on his statement in Discourses to the effect that, with because of the possibility of becoming a widow or the increasing number of divorces in the church, women should prepare to take careers, if necessary. And that side discussion dried up.

Brother and Sister Quintas were the young adult advisors for the stake.

On the way home, Julia leaned her head on my shoulder and asked, absently, "So is getting a college degree a commandment?"

Giselle looked at me in the rear view mirror.

"Commandments --" I began.

"Commandments?"

"-- as I understand it, are mostly given to individuals through the Holy Spirit, according to their situations and needs."

"Can you quote me chapter and verse on that?"

"Let's study the question tomorrow."

"Okay. I was afraid I'd feel out of place, because everyone would be spiritual giants."

Giselle said, "Yep. We are all definitely not spiritual giants!"

I nodded my head. Julia closed her eyes with a comfortable smile and nestled into my arm around her shoulder, and Giselle winked at me in the mirror. I kissed the top of her head and let myself get lost in analyzing the scent of her hair.

"You know, we could take turns driving to school." Julia was getting a hug from me before getting in her car to drive home."

"Good idea. I'll pick you up tomorrow. Is 8:30 too early?"

"I'll be ready."

After she left, I called Denny.

"So how did it go?"

"I have no idea. Lot's of talk. Me talking too much. No decisions. Well, except I have to help five people get their Micro Chroma 68s running with 6803s."

"Not 68701s?"

"Not 68701s, apparently. It would have been cool to have the 68701 boot to its own ROM, initialize its own internal ports, and then switch to the monitor ROM."

"Sounds tricky, and I wonder if it's really worth it. You won't be able to access the code in the internal ROM all that easily, ya know. But I'll scrounge you up more 68701s. How's Julia?"

"Geaugh. No, I mean good, but scary."

"Heh."

Before I went to bed, I doodled up a design that would allow installing a 4K ROM and up to 32K of RAM on the daughterboard. I thought about it long enough to decide maybe it wouldn't really be such a good idea, but I decided I'd show it to the other students anyway.

"Ehhh?" I had to think about that a moment. "Ah, you're referring to the floppy controller."

"Right."

"Do you want to see what I showed Ms. Bight?"

"No, going back over that won't be necessary."

"Current status is not-quite-there-yet. I have routines to write tracks and sectors in MFM, so I should be able to format a disk for Giselle's Color Computer, but the Color Computer doesn't recognize the formatted disk. And my controller doesn't recognize tracks laid down by the Color Computer."

"I think I've got that taken care of."

"Let's see you prove it."

I looked around and addressed the students. "Uh, this isn't directly related to the project, and I think we've covered a lot of ground on the project today. So if anyone needs to go, go ahead."

Suzanne said, "If Mark and Jeff are willing to walk me through how they put their designs together, I'd like to see that before I go."

"Are you guys up for that?"

Mark and Jeff looked at each other and nodded.

Mark said, "You talk about how showing stuff to others helps you learn it better yourself. I'm willing to try it."

Jeff added, "I'm game, too."

"But I also want to watch while you work on your floppy controller." Suzanne raised her eyebrows apologetically.

"So you could keep an eye on what we do with the floppies while you work on your trainer design?"

"I could probably do that."

"Okay. And anyone who wants to leave, somebody will take notes."

"Oh." Mom stood up. "That's me. Your papers should be coming soon."

Dad stood up, too. "I will help you," he said in his pseudo-mock seriousness.

"Thanks for coming, Mom, Dad."

"Wouldn't have missed it, Hon. See you at home."

"Do the good, son."

And they left, along with most of the school board members. None of the students left.

Jeff asked, "Who wants to get started working on your trainers?"

Several students said they did, so Mark and Jeff moved around to help them.

Ms. Steward asked, "So, Joe, are you going to design another of those trainers for yourself?"

"I'm thinking I'll design one with the 6805, since Julia already built the design she helped me put together. But, I need to get Flex running first."

Julia was sitting near me, in front of the computer, and gave me a quiet sideways kick.

"Hey. I'm glad you built it. And it gives me an excuse to do another."

She crinkled her eyebrows in a smirk.

"Hah. Well, let's look at your floppy controller," Ms. Steward prompted me

Julia and Giselle helped me demonstrate the parts of the controller I had gotten working, showing how the controller and drive were able to address track and sector, how I had used floppies written by the Color Computer to align my drives, and how the floppies formatted with the 68701 controller on the Micro Chroma 68 were not yet compatible with those the Color Computer produced.

Mr. Wells asked, "Do you have an idea what's wrong?"

"Nothing clear, but the first thing I'm going to try is using the Micro Chroma to get a raw read of a track written by the Color Computer drive. That'll tell us a lot. Ran out of time for it last night."

Julia murmured, "Sorry."

"For what?"

"Taking your time last night."

"I'm not sorry. It was a good homework session." I wasn't sure if it was Ms. Bight or Ms Philips that snickered, but I ignored it, and it seemed Julia did, as well. "Let's see what that raw read looks like."

Using the programs and circuits that I had put together earlier, I used Giselle's disk drive with the Micro Chroma 68 and my controller to write full tracks at track zero, track 18, and track thirty-five, then used my drive to read the tracks back and make sure that what was written was exactly what was read back. I explained that it was not proof that my drives and heads were correctly aligned, but that it did raise my confidence level on the alignment.

Then I read the first track on a floppy formatted by the Color Computer and on a floppy formatted by the Micro Chroma 68. Comparing the tracks, it quickly became apparent that my controller was writing the sectors too early.

"Ah." I showed the track read results to those who were watching at the time. "See that? My calculations for the timing to reach each sector is a bit quicker than the timing for the Western Digital controller."

Then I set an oscilloscope up to trigger on the end of a sector, and confirmed for myself that the controller needed to wait about fourteen micro-seconds longer in the disk rotation before starting a sector write, and wait about that much longer before giving up on a sector read.

I showed the timing signal patterns on the scope, then showed the source code for the section that set the timing up.

Some of the students were not seeing what was happening, so I wrote more test data and showed more measurements.

Wallace asked, "Can you fix it?"

"I guess I can."

I rewrote the sector timing code, burned it into another 68701 to avoid waiting for the EPROM eraser to finish, and also to keep the old version around for reference. I plugged the newly burned 68701 into the drive controller board, and used it to format a new disk on the Micro Chroma 68.

Then I used the newly formatted disk to save and load files on the Color Computer, and the students watching cheered when the files came back successfully.

Ms. Bight looked surprised. "You managed to construct an empty directory with that already?"

"The Color Computer Disk BASIC just assumes that empty directory sectors are an empty directory, so just formatting everything blank is enough."

"Oh. Simple is useful."

"Sometimes."

Everyone watched while the Micro Chroma, with the later timing in the read, successfully read individual sectors from the Color Computer formatted disk.

Then we checked the data patterns again with the scope. My controller still did not produce identical patterns to those produced on the Color Computer, but they were much closer.

"I'll write code to exercise the entire drive later, when I can take the time to do it right, but I should be able to install Flex pretty soon, and then I'll have a proper operating system."

"Flex is the OS?" Freddie asked.

Pat answered, "It's supposed to be similar to CPM."

"It's the OS I'm going to use for now."

Bob asked, "So that floppy disk controller is basically the 68701?"

"Right. The same one that I'm going to use in a redesign of the Micro Chroma 68."

"Then the Western Digital floppy disk controller is just a microprocessor?"

"With a bit of internal circuitry that's external on my controller."

"So it's a pretty good controller."

"I think so."

"If I make a controller for oil field gear using the 68701, will Motorola require royalties or something?"

"Royalties." I muttered. It occurred to me that the term "royalty" itself spoke volumes to the issues of whether current patent and copyright law were in effective contradiction to the Constitution, but I decided to save that discussion for later.

"Depends on what the design looks like," Ms. Philips filled in for me. "It's quite possible to build many things with the 68701 that don't infringe Motorola's patent claims, but we have a legal department that can help vet the design. Let me get your name and address and we'll send you some information about that."

"And the school board says the school can help while you're a student here," Dr. Brown added. "Come talk to me about it."

"Sounds good." Bob seemed happy with this information as he wrote his contact information down for Ms. Philips.

"How is everyone coming on designing their trainers?" I asked.

Mark looked up from where he was helping Wallace. "Pretty good. Anyone else going to work on theirs today?"

I looked around at the students. "Looks like everybody who isn't working on their design now thinks they are already finished?"

"Think." Jennifer laughed. "That's probably accurate. We'll see how complete our designs are as we get them put together, I guess."

There were scattered chuckles.

"It'll be a good thing to do next week?" Dr. Brown suggested, to general agreement.

"What about Julia?" Suzanne asked, looking up from the schematic that Jeff was helping her with. "Is she going to build her own design? Why does she get to use your design?"

I chuckled as I turned to Julia, and I noticed Mike had looked up from his work at her, too. I had the impression she was deliberately ignoring him.

"What do you think, Julia? Do you want to try your own design?"

She smirked. "I suppose I'd have to spend even more time at your house, so you could teach me all the electronics I don't know yet."

In the corner of my eye, I could see Mike's face fall.

I turned back to Suzanne. "Julia's in a different field. She's here because she's my friend. And she's helping make this project possible. And if she wants to get credit for this as a project class, yeah, she'll do her own. If it's possible to get credit without taking the prerequisites."

"Credit. I wonder if it would be useful in my field." Julia tilted her head and pulled her mouth to one side.

"Helping, huh?" Suzanne looked over at President Flyer, and pulled her lips into a faint grimace.

"I can be incredibly bad about writing things down. Perhaps I shouldn't let her help me with that, but, if she weren't helping me keep track of what I'm doing, we would not be here today." I looked around the room. "Does anyone else take exception to these arrangements?"

"No way!" Jennifer was quick to speak, and others echoed her sentiment. Mike remained silent.

Rather than escalating things further, I waited for Suzanne to respond, trying to read her intent from her expression, but there was too much mixed in to read clearly.

After maybe half a minute, she said, quietly,"Sorry, Julia. I'm not really a bitch all the time."

"No offense taken. It's probably good to clarify things, anyway."

"Yeah. My fault for not explaining why she's here," I added.

Suzanne turned back to her design, and several of the students gathered around to back-seat drive as Jeff continued helping her work out something she was having trouble with. I went over to check, too, but Jeff had already figured out what she was stuck on and was quickly getting her untangled without my help.

"Just so Dr. Brown and I have some idea where things are headed, how many of us are building 6805 trainers?" I asked.

All of the students raised their hands.

"Oh. Then nobody building 6801 trainers?"

More than half raised their hands.

"Ah, okay, how about 9940s?"

Four students.

And three were targeting 6502, two were targeting Z-80, two were targeting 8085, one was targeting 1802, and one was targeting Z-8.

"Great. Many of you are already planning your second and third steps. Any others?"

Bob raised his hand. "8088."

"Very good."

Jeff and Mark raised their hands and said, practically in unison, "6809."

"Great."

Mike raised his hand, as well. "68008."

"Okay." I looked around, and it appeared no one else wanted to announce more plans.

"So, I think we're done with this week's installment, and I think I need to give my attention to some non-students for a bit. Will next Thursday be okay for everyone to get together and compare progress, as Dr. Brown suggests?"

"Wait!" Winston called out. "What about the Micro Chroma 68 boards?"

Lots of faces turned.

I looked over at Ms. Steward. "What is the official word on that? Can they be made available?"

"I've brought five, with 6803s instead of 6802s in the included chipset, if anyone is really anxious to have one. One is for you, Joe, to work on the daughterboard with, since I assume you want to keep the one you've got running for the tools it has."

"True, it's probably safer to do that on a different board."

"6803s?" Terry asked.

"A 6803 is a 6801 that doesn't have ROM," Jeff explained. "The 6846's monitor ROM should work, shouldn't it?" he asked Ms. Steward.

"Yes, the engineers say it should. It just needs the daughterboard, to convert between the pinout of the 6803 and the 6802 pinout laid out on the board."

Dr. Brown asked, "Could I buy a couple of those for the school?"

Ms. Steward looked perplexed. "I think I can get you a couple, but I'll have to check with my boss. These are only cleared for students, and non-students should be paying a non-student price. On the other hand, we might be able to just donate a couple to the school. Can I borrow your phone to check with the office later? They didn't send us out with one of our portable phones."

"Sure. That would be really great."

Julia said, quietly, "Could I get one, even though I'm not really in the project?"

I exchanged glances with her. "It's not compatible with the Color Computer."

"I know."

"What do you think?" Ms. Steward asked Ms. Philips.

"At present, there's nothing in our plan that says the students have to be in a technology or engineering major, so, yes, you could, Julia."

Mark asked, "Say, Joe, you're pretty busy, you think Jeff and I could work out the daughterboard design?"

I didn't even have to think about it. "Mostly a matter of hard-wiring the boot mode, setting up some latches to de-multiplex the buses, and then routing the demultiplexed buses. I think there's a control signal or two to be synthesized. Sure."

I thought for a moment. "Well, I might add wiring for a DMA controller .... Nah, not relevant. Most of you guys could do it. I'll check what you come up with before we break up, and I'll bet somebody could get a board booting to the monitor over the weekend."

"But it looks like there's more interest than we have boards with us," Ms. Steward pointed out. "We'll dig up more when we get back to Austin, and have them shipped, but I don't want to suggest how we should distribute these that I've brought."

"Dr. Brown, what do you think?"

"Who's ready to buy one now?"

Mark and Jeff raised their hands, as did Winston and Suzanne. I had the impression most of the rest of the students were holding back.

Mr. Cisneros said, "Julia?"

"I'm willing to wait, Dad."

Jennifer spoke up. "I think Julia should get one."

"She'll get the one I use to develop the daughterboard. She's likely to be helping me with it anyway."

Jennifer looked like she wanted to try to convince Suzanne to wait, but she backed off.

"If everyone else is willing to wait, there is also the redesign I'll be working on when I get the disk drive controller working and the daughterboard ready. That will be a lot more work, since it'll be all point-to-point wiring, unless you're willing to wait until Motorola gets it ready to make a PC board."

Greg said, "I'd rather have something that's known to work."

"Okay, how many of us want one, if they can find that many?"

All the students raised their hands.

Ms. Steward nodded and said, "I'll see what we can do."

With that, the meeting broke up. Many of the students and the rest of the school board and staff other than Dr. Brown left. Julia's parents said goodbye, too.

Mark, Jeff, Winston, and Suzanne stayed to buy their boards and discuss building the computer, and several others stayed as well -- Bob, Jennifer, Pat, Mike, and George among them, wanting information.

While Ms. Steward was getting them taken care of for them, I went over to talk with Dave and Jayne. Mr. Wells and Ms. Philips were deep in discussion nearby.

"Sorry I never dropped by."

"I must say, I don't blame you. TI's 9900 has not been well received."

"I never was very confident of my productivity while I was working for you guys."

Dave looked at me straight-on. "You're one of those slow but steady types.  Management was disappointed when you decided to leave."

I ducked my head. "Well, what can I do from here?"

"Do you think you could you work up an analysis of the 9900 like you've done with the 6800 and present it to our board of directors? There is a group working on an advanced controller design, but it would be something of a coup if we could directly recover our investment in the 9900. Or, if the 9900 is just not going to work, it would be good to have some better reasons why."

"Better?"

Jayne shook her head. "Lots of negativity in the company towards it."

I nodded. "It'll take me a bit of time. I'll have to work with the four who want to work with the 9940. Can you at least sample me a couple of parts?"

"I'm pretty sure we can sample parts for both you and the four who have expressed interest, we just can't promise more than two for you without checking upstairs first."

"Specs?"

"We held a set back for you," Jayne grinned as she handed me the datasheets and application notes.

"Okay." I accepted what she gave me and examined it. "I'll take a closer look at these over the next few days and call you with some initial plans."

I turned to Ms. Bight.

She didn't make me ask. "There's a lot of interest in how this project is coming together. We're not really ready to make an offer on your summertime until we see the results. We do want you to join us for an internship, but we don't want to make specific plans too far ahead of time. We also may be interested in accepting internship applications from one or two other students from this group, if you want to recommend someone."

"Okay."

Mr. Goldwater grinned. "I still have doubts about some of this, but I think you're doing a great job, really."

Mr. Wells nodded. "And I'm going to talk with Ms. Steward about sharing your summer with Motorola, as one possibility."

"I'm in agreement on that," Ms. Philips said.

Ms. Steward returned. "So, what would you think of writing an article on the Micro Chroma 68 and the Micro Chroma 6801 over spring break? -- as an internship project."

I had to think about it.

"Yeah, I guess I could do that. But I don't want to lose my whole spring break." I looked over at at the group where Julia was sitting. "Would there be a problem with me enlisting help?"

Ms. Philips answered. "Shouldn't be, if you can work it out the details with, uhm, the people you ask, I suppose." She grinned, knowingly. "Just be fair with them and make it clear in your reports to us who did what."

We talked a bit more about technology and microprocessors while Ms. Steward and Ms. Turner put their cameras and recorders away. I tried a couple of times to bring up the 6809, but both Ms. Steward and Ms. Philips seemed to be avoiding the topic.

After the three corporate contingents left, I joined the discussion about the Micro Chroma 68 daughterboard and checked the schematics they had drawn. Mark's and Jeff's were essentially the same, and looked workable. Bob's attempt looked too complicated, and the others had given up.

"You know, I'd kinda like to try to put mine together tonight," Winston said.

Suzanne gave me a look that I suppose she thought was meaningful. "Yeah, me, too. I suppose you're busy tonight?"

"Yeah, I've got a bit to do. A lot to do, really."

"I'm definitely not in a rush to get mine built," Julia said.

"Parts. You all need parts. Do you know what parts you need?"

Jeff dug through the manuals that had come with the board, and started through the parts lists. "Got one of these. Need this. ..."

Jeff watched for a moment, then started working through the parts list, checking what he had, and then Winston and Suzanne did the same.

Julia and Giselle and I exchanged glances, and Julia and I both shrugged.  I sat down and drew up a parts list for the daughterboard before checking my own parts bins. "Are you guys going to all converge on the Radio Shack on Andrews Highway?"

"There's also the one in the mall," Mike pointed out.

"Dad does business with the supply shop next to the surplus store out on West County Road." (That highway has long since been renamed.)

"Let's get what parts we can tonight and tomorrow after lunch, then get together again here," I suggested. "Would that be okay, Dr. Brown?"

"Sure."

The rest left, and Julia and Giselle and I packed up the computers and loaded them in the Colt. Giselle road with Julia in her car.

Rather than escalating things further, I waited for Suzanne to respond, trying to read her intent from her expression, but there was too much mixed in to read clearly.

After maybe half a minute, she said, quietly,"Sorry, Julia. I'm not really a bitch all the time."

"No offense taken. It's probably good to clarify things, anyway."

"Yeah. My bad for not doing so," I added.

Suzanne turned back to her design, and several of the students gathered around to back-seat drive as Jeff continued helping her work out something she was having trouble with. I went over to check, but Jeff had already figured out what she was stuck on and quickly got her untangled without my help.

"Just so Dr. Brown and I have some idea where things are headed, how many of us are building 6805 trainers?" I asked.

All of the students raised their hands.

"Oh. Nobody building 6801 trainers?"

More than half raised their hands.

"Ah, okay, how about 9940s?"

Four students.

And three were targeting 6502, two were targeting Z-80, two were targeting 8085, one was targeting 1802, and one was targeting Z-8.

"Great. Many of you are already planning your second and third steps. Any others?"

Bob raised his hand. "8088."

"Very good."

Jeff and Mark raised their hands and said, practically in unison, "6809."

"Great."

Mike raised his hand, as well. "68008."

"Okay." I looked around, and it appeared no one else wanted to announce more plans.

"So, I think we're done with this week's installment, and I think I need to give my attention to some non-students for a bit. Will next Thursday be okay for everyone to get together and compare progress, as Dr. Brown suggests?"

"Wait!" Winston called out. "What about the Micro Chroma 68 boards?"

Lots of faces turned.

I looked over at Ms. Steward. "What is the official word on that? Can they be made available?"

"I've brought five, with 6803s instead of 6802s in the included chipset, if anyone is really anxious to have one. One is for you, Joe, to work on the daughterboard with, since I assume you want to keep yours running for the tools it has."

"True, it's probably safer to do that on a different board."

"6803s?" Terry asked.

"A 6803 is a 6801 that doesn't have ROM," Jeff explained. "The 6846's monitor ROM should work, shouldn't it?" he asked Ms. Steward.

"Yes, the engineers say it should. It just needs the daughterboard, to convert the pinouts between the 68701 and the 6802 layout on the board."

Dr. Brown asked, "Could I buy a couple of those for the school?"

Ms. Steward looked perplexed. "I think so, but I'll have to check with my boss. These are only cleared for students, and non-students should be paying a non-student price. On the other hand, we might be able to just donate a couple to the school. Can I borrow your phone to check with the office later? They didn't send us out with one of our portable phones."

"Sure. That would be really great."

Julia said, quietly, "Could I get one, even though I'm not really in the project?"

I exchanged glances with her. "It's not compatible with the Color Computer."

"I know."

"What do you think?" Ms. Steward asked Ms. Philips.

"At present, there's nothing in our plan that says the students have to be in a technology or engineering major, so, yes, you could, Julia."

Mark asked, "Say, Joe, you're pretty busy, you think Jeff and I could work out the daughterboard design?"

I didn't even have to think about it. "Mostly a matter of hard-wiring the boot mode, setting up some latches to de-multiplex the buses, and then routing the buses. I think there's a control signal or two to be synthesized. Sure. Most of you guys could do it. I'll check what you come up with before I head home, and I'll bet somebody could get a board booting to the monitor over the weekend."

"But it looks like there's more interest than we have boards with us," Ms. Steward pointed out. "We'll dig up more when we get back to Austin, and have them shipped, but I don't want to suggest how we should distribute these that I've brought."

"Dr. Brown, what do you think?"

"Who's ready to buy one now?"

Mark and Jeff raised their hands, as did Winston and Suzanne. Most of the rest of the students were hesitating.

Mr. Cisneros said, "Julia?"

"I'm willing to wait, Dad."

Jennifer spoke up. "I think Julia should get one."

"She'll get the one I use to develop the daughterboard. She's likely to be helping me with it anyway."

Jennifer looked like she wanted to try to convince Suzanne to wait, but she backed off.

"If everyone else is willing to wait, there is also the redesign I'll be working on when I get the disk drive controller working and the daughterboard ready. That will be a lot more work, since it'll be all point-to-point wiring, unless you're willing to wait until Motorola gets it ready to make a PC board."

Greg said, "I'd rather have something that is known to work."

"Okay, how many of use want one, if they can find that many?"

All the students raised their hands.

Ms. Steward nodded and said, "I'll see what we can do."

With that, the meeting broke up. Most of the students left. Mark, Jeff, Winston, and Suzanne stayed to buy their boards and check the integrated circuits that were included.

While Ms. Steward was getting that taken care of for them, I went over to talk with Dave and Jayne. Mr. Wells and Ms. Philips were deep in discussion nearby.

"Sorry I never dropped by."

"I must say, I don't blame you. TI's 9900 has not been well received."

"I never was very confident of my productivity while I was working for you guys."

Dave looked at me straight-on. "You're one of those slow, but good types.  Management was disappointed when you decided to leave."

I ducked my head. "Well, what can I do from here?"

"Do you think you could you work up an analysis of the 9900 like you've done with the 6800 and present it to our board of directors? There is a group working on an advanced controller design, but it would be something of a coup if we could directly recover our investment in the 9900. Or, if the 9900 is just not going to work, it would be good to have some more reasons why."

"More?"

Jayne shook her head. "Lots of negativity about it."

I nodded. "It'll take me a bit of time. I'll have to work with the four who want to work with the 9940. Can you at least sample me a couple of parts?"

"I'm pretty sure we can sample parts for both you and those four, we just can't promise more than two without checking upstairs."

"Okay, I'll take a look at it tonight and call you tomorrow with some temporary plans."

I turned to Ms. Bight.

She didn't make me ask. "There's a lot of interest in how this project is coming together, and we're not really ready to make an offer on your summertime until we see the results. We do want you to join us for an internship, but we don't want to be too specific about what it will be ahead of time. We're also interested in one or two other students from this group, if you want to recommend someone."

"Okay."

Mr. Goldwater grinned. "I still have some doubts about all this, but I think you're doing a great job, really."

Mr. Wells nodded. "I'm going to talk with Ms. Steward about sharing your summer with Motorola, as one possibility."

"I'm in agreement on that," Ms. Philips said.

Ms. Steward returned. "So, what would you think of writing an article on the Micro Chroma 68 and the Micro Chroma 6801 over spring break? -- as an internship project."

"Yeah, I think I can do that. Would there be a problem with enlisting Julia's help?"

Ms. Philips answered. "Shouldn't be, if you can work it out with her, I suppose."

We talked a bit more about technology and microprocessors while Ms. Steward and Ms. Turner put their cameras and recorders away. I kept trying to guide the conversation towards the 6809, but both Ms. Steward and Ms. Philips seemed to be one step ahead, and kept shifting the conversation away.

Julia and Giselle helped me pack up our stuff, and followed me home again in Julia's car.

"Well, are there any papers left for me to deliver?" I asked as we brought stuff in from the Colt.

"Nope. Sorry, we done it all by ourselves." Mom grinned at me.

"Sorry. Thanks."

"How did it go?"

"I guess I'll know soon enough. I did fix a bug in the controller code."
